Goat Mountain from Waterton Canyon

Goat Mountain (7,797′) is a great option to escape crowds while staying close to Denver. The lack of hiker/runner traffic is somewhat surprising given its proximity to the very well traveled Waterton Canyon.

After about a mile up Waterton Canyon (South Platte Road), turn right underneath two large pipes.

The trail is well-defined and you’ll find numerous cairns as well.

Next you will pop out on a road above Lockheed (the road is closed to the public below).

Pants or calf sleeves are highly recommended to avoid cuts from all the scrubs.

You will continue on the ridge over several bumps. Here is the final approach.
