The Battery is a good early season workout as it provides a little bit more recover time than other workouts. It also uses the key idea of developing active recovery, which is important in speedwork. This workout is designed to point out that final stretches are largely mental as well.
The workout is fairly simple in structure. You start by running 300m @ 5k pace, before recharging/recovering on the final 100m straightaway. Then you roll straight into the next 300m @ 5k pace. Push yourself to finish the entire 400m on the last of the set of four AA Batteries.
After a few minute break, roll into the AAA Batteries. Here you will complete 600m (1.5 laps on a standard 1/4 mile track.), followed by a 200m recharge. Again, complete the entire distance (800m) on the last rep..
If you are further along in training or looking for an added challenge, you can pick more aggressive paces for the workout. Obviously, you can add more reps. as well.
